From stitching clothes to making jam, evening classes teaching domestic skills are enjoying an unprecedented surge in popularity thanks to the economic downturn.

According to the UK’s largest course provider,, the number of people looking for cookery classes has more than doubled in the last 12 months, while there has been an 84% rise in the number of internet searches for sewing and dressmaking tuition.
